Submerged (a mermaid tale) by Pauline Creeden

Mermaids can be cruel creatures.

I couldn’t stop them from hurting her, but I couldn’t let them destroy her, no matter what they did to me. The moment I heard the bottom feeder had been chosen for the reckoning, my heart sank. Had I been discovered for what I truly was? Years of pretending I was just like everyone else could all have been for naught. But then I heard it was Verona, and my blood ran cold.

Why was I surprised?

I shouldn’t have been. I’d stood by and watched her ridiculed since we were younglings. I was never as brave or as unselfish as she was. But today, I would be.

Mermaids can be cruel creatures.

Verona is a bottom feeder. She is the one mer in her clan who is considered the ugliest and least intelligent. Growing up with the constant bullying and abuse wasn’t the worst of what her kind had in store for her. At seventeen years old, she must now endure “The Reckoning.”

The scales will measure her worth to her clan. Will she endure thirty days as a land-walker to gather information and knowledge to appease her clan and return a valued member? Will she wait three years, until she is twenty, and find a mer of her kind to accept her and marry her? Or will she suffer exile for the rest of her life?

Edger by David Beem

Edger

by David Beem

Meet Edger (Ed-jer), a twenty-six-year-old gadget retail dork destined to become the world’s first superhero!

His superpower: the ability to channel the Collective Unconscious, a psychic network connecting the living and the dead. In his arsenal are the skills of Bruce Lee, the strength of Samson, the wisdom of the ages…and the dancing chops of Michael Jackson—including that one twisty foot move, crotch grab, and fedora tilt.

But there’s a catch…

Like every psychic superpower to get administered through a hypodermic needle, this one comes with a prick. Someone seems to have misplaced the booster necessary for stabilizing his superpower. Without it, Edger has three days before his brain turns to pudding.

Join our Dork of Destiny as he overcomes the world’s greatest butt, two rival Cluck-n-Pray gangs, an evil cow, a Green Bay Defensive Tackle, rifle-toting assassins—and a pair of stoners who inadvertently create the world’s first supervillain after a wild night on Twitter!

“…undeniably entertaining.” – Kirkus Reviews

Interview with Author David Beem

Try to describe your book in one sentence.

It’s a comedy about a computer nerd whose world is turned upside down by a sexy spy to become the world’s first superhero.

State a random fact about yourself that would surprise your readers.

I’m hiding in your pantry right now, eating all your crackers.

If you wouldn’t be a writer, what you would be?

         Hitman. I’d totally kill it.

Do you read reviews written about your book?

I do. Not only that, I obtain the names and addresses of all the trolls out there. So keep it up, Brenda!

Who is your favorite character in your new release?

Shmuel. Balding, early forties. Been stoned since his twenties (ostensibly to manage his hemorrhoids). He’s the getaway driver for the A-Team, and underest under achiever to ever under achieve.

Do you see yourself in any of your characters?

Shmuel. For I, too, am confused by adulthood and stuff. For I, too, am the getaway driver—only for me the getting away driving is usually for my wife at a Meijer.

What inspired you to write, you took any ideas from other books, movies etc?

Edger arose like the Sword of Justice at twilight from a placid lake…after binge-watching Chuck on Netflix. The queen and I were devastated to have arrived at the end. We wanted more. Determined, I went down, down, down to the magician’s quarters. We plotted, then pantsed it. Together, we stirred the cauldron: One part, Chuck, one part Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and one part superhero movies (for the magician’s daughter is smitten with superhero action movie Chrises). And lo, Edger was born.

Do you have an all-time favorite book?

         Good Omens.

Do you prefer Twitter or Facebook?

         Facebook.

The last book you’ve read?

         Stick Dog Chases a Pizza.

Anything else you would like to add?

Yes. Eventually I realized, alas, that the main purpose of eating Pringles is to finish them…alone, broken, and friendless.

Interview with author CJ Warrant

If someone else wrote a blurb about your book what would it say?
Las Vegas stripper, Jazz is the Mirror Image of a murderer, and finds out they might be twins. With help from a Denver cop, they discover the dark secret and truth about her past and the true identity of the killer

Tell me a little about yourself.
I’m half Korean and half Italian, born an army brat in Korea but family came to the US when I was five. I’m married and have three nearly grown children. I love writing romantic thrillers and I’m audiobook junkie as well as reading.

Who are your cheerleaders?
My family! They all support me, which I’m truly grateful especially on those day when I’m in my writing cave and dinner is still in the freezer.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Erotic Romance. I can’t help it! So sexy.

What’s the hardest part of writing a book?
The editing. It can be daunting, but in the end it’s worth delivering a good book.

Are you a plotter or a pantzer?
I started as a pantzer, but as I write more—especially with series, I seem to lean toward the plotter side.

Did you do any research before start or during of the writing of the books?
Most definitely. I need to get a good feel for my characters, their jobs, where they live—community and their families—if they have families. And since I write romantic suspense and thrillers, I need to make sure my villains’ issues have a bit of reality to their psychotic personalities.

Which genres do you prefer to read?
I love romantic suspense but lately I love reading paranormal romance and m/m romance.

How important do you find the communication between you and your readers? I find it very important to keep in touch with my readers, especially through social media, my newsletters and emails I receive. Do you reply to their messages or read their reviews? I do reply to some messages but not all. And I read all reviews, good and bad.

The last book you’ve read? True by Ella Frank( The Temptation series book 6) I so love the characters in this series. I love the way Ms. Frank turned them alive.

What is in the works for you next? I’m finished with my second novella, which is tied to duet series I have out. And I’m currently editing on two different book series, one is a romantic suspense and the other is a paranormal romance trilogy.

I. Am. Elizabeth by Kathi Haacke Morehead

I. Am. Elizabeth by Kathi Haacke Morehead

I. Am. Elizabeth is a story of medieval intrigue based on the life of Elizabeth Plantagenet. Set both contemporaneously and in the 16th century, the reader will be invited to weigh for themselves the truth of Elizabeth’s life, including the disappearance of Elizabeth’s brothers, the Lost Princes in the Tower, the ascension of her uncle, Richard III, to the throne of England, and her marriage to Henry Tudor. Elizabeth Plantagenet was a daughter, niece, sister, wife, and mother to five Kings of England, and grandmother of the first and second Queens Regnant: Mary I and Elizabeth I. You may have met The White Princess, but prepare for your introduction to the real Elizabeth of York.

Description:
Elizabeth of York died in 1503. Annie Campbell lives today. Can they reach through time to heal one another’s soul, or will their secrets be impossible to overcome?

…. Why can’t I sleep? It is not as though tonight is any different from last night, or the night before, or even the night before that. It’s hot, and not a breath of air moves through the window. I feel like I will go mad from this anxiety, this fear. But of what? It’s so very dark tonight. No moon, no light from the windows. Just dark… Damn you, darkness. You’ve not been kind the past few nights. What horror do you hold for me tonight?

Read our interview with author TM Witko

How would you describe your book in 20 words or less without using the blurb?
The Helios Chronicles follows the ups and downs of Andrew and Madison’s life and love,
in an unforgiving world.

Tell us a little about yourself
For those that don’t know me, my name is T.M. Witko. I am a licensed clinical
psychologist, a full-time writer/editor and one of the co-founders of Winyan Press, LLC,
an independent publishing house geared at helping female writers find their voice.
When I first started writing I thought that I had to pick one particular style and write just
in that style but then I met several writers that were considered multi-genre authors
and realized that I could do all the things I enjoyed. Thus, I consider myself a multi-genre
author who writes Young Adult & New Adult Fiction, Crime/Suspense/Thrillers, Adult
Romance, and Native American Fiction.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Yes, from the time I was tween, I would get lost in the written world, a pleasant escape
from reality. I used to create environments in my head and produce stories for the
events around me. It became a fun game for my friends. They would say, hey Tawa,
‘what’s going on there’, or ‘what do you think is happening in that picture’, and I would
just make up some intricate plot. It was amazing. But, life had other things in mind for
me and I found myself double majoring in Literature and Psychology. God, or the creator
in my tradition, decided my path and I went with it, figuring at some point I would find
myself in the writing world, and, I have.

Do you listen to music while writing?
Always, I have different playlists for my moods. Some artists just evoke certain feelings
in me. For example, the indie artists Bobby Long, served as my music muse for the
Helios Chronicles. There was just something about his songs that made me feel as if he
were writing about my Helios. I remember when I first started writing again, if I
indicated that I was listening to Kings of Leon, people knew something bad was about to
happen…. LOL, but Kris Allen, served the opposite, he always made me feel hopeful and
carefree. I actually have a few songs I have heard recently that I’m dying to write a story
to. It was like, the moment I heard them a story began to form in my head. I’m sure I’ll
write them at some point ?

Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Yes, usually I put a piece of myself in several characters, whether it be a quirk or my
favorite coffee, or favorite sports team. Some characters are more me than others. I just
finished writing a Young Adult story with my teenage daughter and the dynamics of the
mother and daughter are very much us.

Are you a plotter or a pantzer?
I am definitely a plotter. Before I start writing I have it outlined, with family trees, and
timelines of events. I do this with all my stories but even more so when I write suspense.
But, even in The Helios Chronicles, I needed an extensive timeline for when things
happen, because while you can read each book independently, there are some
overarching themes, so I needed to make sure they all connected.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Because I am a multi-genre author, my inspiration comes from a lot of places. I will say
that I really love throwing angst in stories, which I know comes from the work I do as a
clinical psychologist. That energy has to go somewhere and it often ends up in my
stories. Not specific things, mind you, that would be a breach of confidentiality, but it’s
more the energy that comes off of being in despair. If I’m good at what I do then I take a
little bit of that energy away from my clients and take it with me, so they can be a bit
better, but I have to get rid of it, so when a story is particularly angsty, I know it’s been a
rough week, or month. Most of my Native fiction comes from my environment and my
life. And of course, music, or things I see. My children and family, often ground me, just
to make sure I don’t go too deep into the angst or despair. My daughter likes to tell me
that she keeps me from killing everyone off… LOL, she’s probably right on that ?

What book is currently on your nightstand?
I have been re-reading a friend of mines Ceaseless series. She, Mindy Marin, wrote the
first two books, Birth of the Phoenix and Flight of the Thunderbird, and I am anxiously
awaiting the final book, which she hasn’t written yet. It’s a story of love and magic and
reincarnation.

How important do you find the communication between you and your readers? Do you
reply to their messages or read their reviews?
I think it’s integral to developing a fanbase. I respond to every message I receive. I
remember one person having a long conversation with me about my books and she was

simply surprised that she was talking to the author. I told her, ‘if she had the time to
message me, I had the time to answer’. I want to connect with people. There’s not much
I like more than visiting with people about books ?
I definitely read reviews and take it all in. Even if someone doesn’t like something, I
think it’s important, unless of course, it’s just to complain and they don’t really have a
solid reason. I received one review that just didn’t like the POV I used in one of my
books. I immediately jumped over to my editor and asked her about it, she told me that
I was very clear in who was talking and not to feel upset about it. I told her I wasn’t
upset, just curious if that was something I needed to fix in the other books. I don’t think
I’m perfect by far and I’m sure if I re-read any of my books I’d find lots of flaws, wouldn’t
we all? But, yes, I think reviews let us know if we have touched someone or not.
Sometimes people just message me their thoughts which I love but, then I’m thinking,
this is awesome but please, leave this same thought on Amazon… LOL

If you could visit any place in the world or a place created by a book, where would you
visit?
In real life I have always wanted to visit Paris. It’s my dream that I hope to one day fulfill.
As far as in the book universe, that’s easy. I’d want to go to Hogwarts. I’m a huge
Potterhead, as are my children. I think hoping the Hogwarts Express and heading to the
castle would be the ultimate fangirl experience. Guess the closest I will get to that is
Universal Studios ?

What projects are you currently working on right now? Would you mind sharing them
with us?
I have three completed stories set to release in 2018. One is a paranormal young adult
story called, An Unexpected Gift which I wrote with my daughter. It’s the first book in a
series called The Diakrisis Tales, about a young girl named Parker, who unbeknownst to
her, possess the gift to not only see spirits but communicate with them as well. In the
first book she finds herself battling a demon in her new town. The second book is a
crime suspense story called, Retaliatory Justice which is about a group of elite ATF
agents, trying to solve a multi-city crime. It is also the first book of a series, this one
called The Talionic Files. In the first book we find Valentino taking on the case of his
career, but can he complete the mission without losing himself in the process? The third
book is an adult romance called, Beyond the Beach, which is a story of two people,
Masen and Zoe, who decide to have an island fling, only they end up falling in love with
one another. Will they be able to say goodbye at the end of their time together?

Captain Hawkins (The Jamie Hawkins Saga Book 1)

captainhawkinsbookblast517reevqnflStrong vibrant characters with action packed battle drama

Jamie Hawkins was living on an obscure planet in the twenty third-century when on one fateful night–his life changed forever. His heroic effort to save the lives of innocent women and children, caught in the cross-fire of war, placed him squarely in the cross-hairs of avenging soldiers.

Hawkins was stunned when his rescue effort was seen as treachery. Unfairly convicted of treason by a corrupt judge, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on an infamous penal colony.

Once in prison, his courage and perseverance won him the admiration and trust of his fellow convicts. While he was plotting his escape, an enemy attacked the planet–giving this daring warrior his chance. Together with his fellow prisoners, he launched a bold assault and high-jacked an enemy warship.

From then on, Captain Jamie Hawkins and his ship the Indefatigable fought against a corrupt government–only to discover a mysterious alien presence behind the war.

Letting Go: A Contemporary Romantic Thriller by Anthony Awtrey

lettinggobooktourletting_go_2000x3000Despite his wealth, Alex Thompson has been living in fear since his wife died in childbirth. A frivolous wrongful death lawsuit, harassing phone calls, and anonymous threats drive him and his five-year-old twins away from their home in Houston and into the crosshairs of a sniper.

Molly McDill is a struggling single mom who lives next door to Alex and his twins. When she helps them adjust to their new life in the country, she exposes herself and her son to the same threat that followed Alex.

An attempt on his life throws their lives into chaos, inviting more threats, public scrutiny, and Molly’s ex-husband back into her life. The tension tests the attraction they feel toward each other as they struggle to keep life normal for their kids.

Alex still doesn’t know who wants him dead but suspects his former in-laws. As the threats become a visceral danger, Alex and Molly race to uncover the secret that died with his wife before it costs them everything.

About A.L. Awtrey

After working more than twenty years as a technologist and scientist, Anthony started writing fiction again for the a_l_awtrey_authorfirst time since college. Developing white paper studies and proposals for years provided a foundation in technical writing, but telling a compelling story was much harder than it appeared.

Four years of practice where he wrote eight novels and dozens of short stories improved his dialog, description, tension, and pacing. With his latest novel, Letting Go, Anthony is ready to release it under his own name. He’s a member of the Central Florida Chapter of the Romance Writers of America and Florida Writers Association.

When he’s not writing, Anthony is the CTO of a technology consultancy and a professional singer.
